Sarzmc's travel blog entry: "A couple of weekends ago we went to Galiano Island for a bike riding weekend. It was a bit of a mission to get there though, as there are only two bike racks on each bus here in Vancouver. The trip to Tsawwassen ferry terminal is a hassle at the best of times and despite our 6am start we still had to plead with the bus driver to let us on as the bike racks were already taken. He very kindly let us put them on the back of the bus, which was one of those super long ones and not very full. Luckily the second bus from Airport Station's rack was free. Everything else went fine and the ferry trip over was nice as it was a beautiful day. We arrived at the main town of Sturdies Bay and after a quick detour to the markets nearby, we set off for the other end of the island. The whole place is only 3km wide by 29km long so biking is a good way to get around and apart from the southern end there aren't many cars. However, there were more hills on Galiano than we had expected! We'd been slogging it out for about an hour and a half, up some real killer hills, when we checked the map and realised we were nearly two thirds of the way up the island. Somehow the ride seemed easier after that! We stopped at a place called Lovers Leap for lunch and admired the view of the sparkling blue ocean and <b>...</b>

One of the great non slack dives you can do near Porlier Pass is the Spanish Hills wall. It can be done as a shore dive from the public dock on Galiano, but it is a better experience with a live boat. There is sometimes a small amount of current, you do not want to get caught at the wrong end of the wall at the end of your dive as there is no where to get out easily.

When you can not dive in the passes you try to find a location that is near the pass but not being influenced by currents at the time you wan to dive. This depending on the location can be on the flood or the ebb tide when you might get minimal or no current. The west side of Galiano Island is one of these locations that we often dive. Alcala Point is in the pass proper but just south of it is a great wall dive that we call The Alcala wall. It's plenty deep, plenty rich and if your lucky enough current to push you along gently but not blow your fins off.
