Pregnant, Ready to Pop, and Looking to Set Up a Boat Ride to Salt Spring
Galiano Boaters,
One of our expectant mothers has approached me looking for boats willing to put their names on a list to be called if she chooses to give birth on Salt Spring.
Her midwife has suggested that she at the very least prepare an option for getting to Salt Spring, just in case she changes her mind and decides to go to Salt Spring.
As you all know, the ferry schedule between Galiano and Salt Spring leaves a lot to be desired, and so she's looking for options, perhaps leaving from Montague or Retreat Cove, if transport can be arranged on the other side.
Island Futures Boat Network Gathering
Dear Galiano Island Boaters,
This week we were approached by Victor Anthony of the budding Island Futures boat network http://islandfutures.ca to see whether we thought that Galiano's Montague would be a good place to have a fleet gathering for boats from all over the Gulf Islands.
Islands Futures (Aug. 14th) and Saturna Regatta (September 3rd at Saturna)
Here's a quick note on a couple of events of interest to the Galiano Yacht Club:
1) Island Futures is a group from Gabriola that has taken up the goal of (re)connecting the islands to each other via a network of private boats. They're coming to visit Galiano Island (Montague Harbour) on Aug 14th. Please come to the POTLUCK that Sunday evening in Montague (details TBD... please RSVP to me).
2) The Saturna Regatta is coming up! Rumours on the web suggest that it'll happen Sept. 3rd. Is your sailboat coming? Is it ready? Do you need help? Do you need crew?
Crew Wanted
Would like a crew to bring my 29 ft sailboat from Esquimalt to Galiano the weekend of July 30. This will probably be an over night either at anchor or SNYC in Sidney. i will have my grandson with me. I have room for two.

B.C. Sailing Teaches Our School Kids How To Sail
Another school year is over, but this year the Galiano Community School kids were treated to something extra special. B.C. Sailing brought their Mobile Optimist Sailing School over, which included 8 sailboats, 4 kayaks, a motorized coach boat, 2 highly skilled and qualified instructors and a BOAT LOAD of enthusiasm for the kids!
Our gratitude goes out to Martine and Madelyn for the great show they put on, and to Daniel at BC Sailing's main office for making it all happen.

Galiano Island Boat Show
Hi Galiano Island Boaters,
What would y'all think of having a Galiano Island "Boat Show", round about May 1st?
Good idea? We'd be looking for kayakers, power boaters, sailors, professionals and general enthusiasts to come out and share the season kick off.
Could we converge on the Park Dock? Elsewhere?
Would there be a pub night on the Saturday? Would this go down on the Sunday (to give people the Saturday to get ship shape?)
Would we see lots of boats for sale there?
cheers
Christian
Sailboat caretaker available for Summer 2011
Hello,
I am a new boating enthusiast looking for a sailboat or power boat to care take or rent over the summer (June, July and August). Sleeping space, warmth and a small kitchen required.
I offer to clean (including bottom cleaning) and do small fix ups as part of the deal.
I would like to take very short cruises, but this is *isn't necessary* - I would be perfectly happy to just use the boat as my camp quarters for the summer.
Please contact Karen at 778-855-7024 or karen@jamjar.ca
Thanks from a person who has found the sea in her blood!
Raising a Sunken Sailboat
Back in November, some members of the Galiano boating community pitched in to bring a sunken boat back to the surface.
After a week of heavy rain and snow, one of the boats out on the moorings in Montague Harbour went down. It took somewhere between one and three days to sink. The ever-efficient rumour mill had started grinding while the boat still had 6 inches of freeboard showing, but by that afternoon all we could see was the mast. Luckily for the owner, the sunken boat was tied on to another much larger boat which was keeping it up.

Gem "wins" Div 1 in the 2010 Saturna Island Racing Rules Sailing Race
The annual Saturna Island Racing Rules (SIRR) sailing race is an event I've come to mark my year by.
It's a race that lays low on the local sailing community's radar, but in my mind stands out as not only fun in and of itself, but as an event to be modeled, emulated and propagated.
Just passing its twelfth incarnation, the event promotes a valuable mix of components. In order of priority: Fun, Inclusive Sailing, Fun and Wry Oratory.
Roll Call for Dinghy Race: Sept 11th or 12th?
Got a sailing dinghy?
Able to bring it Sept. 11th or 12th to Montague?
As mentioned previously, Zeus has called for a race on that weekend. As mentioned, the Sunday conflicts with the Old Fashioned Picnic, and he's proposing moving it to Saturday instead.
Can we get a roll call? I'd love to hear whether there are any folks on this list that would enter a small sailing dinghy, if they have or can find one. We made quite a stir with just three boats last time. Can we double the number this time 'round?
cheers
Christian
Dinghy Race
Zeus has thrown down a challenge, and invited us all to a dinghy race.
Turns out he's calling for it to happen on the same day at the Old Fashioned Picnic.
Let's get the dinghy racing group together on this one. Thoughts? Ideas?

Sailing Party Crew Wanted - Saturna Island Regatta
UPDATE: The crew spots are filled. Expect some ridiculous photos and/or media clips.

It's the opposite of serious sailboat racing, but they're serious about their fun. The idea is to race 'round the buoys, head for the shore BBQ, and "argue" who actually won. You give your speech, then vote for the winner.
It's a commitment, leaving Friday evening from Montague, headed for Saturna Island, coming back Sunday morning... I'm sailing in this year's rendition of the Saturna Island Sailing Race.
