There are three components of sustainable island community that deserve special focus:

Employment, Housing and Culture.

When facilitating the ease of transition for individuals moving to the island, people could use help with finding employment, finding quality housing and becoming connected to our vibrant culture (the film school and media community, the boating scene, growing quality food, soccer, music, hockey, the fitness centre, the activity centre, gatherings in the parks, nature trails and hiking, the new annual picnic, etc. etc.)

Active Galiano has turned two important corners lately, and it's time to celebrate them with everyone that has helped us get to this point by putting their content into the site.

Long time no chat.

We're going to roll out some space for local business ads, on the website and on the printouts. Every last penny of money that comes to Active Galiano will go back out to community development projects and it's time to decide which community development project deserves any funds that Active Galiano can raise.

Did you know that you can now subscribe to Shrimp?

Let me explain... recently Cheryl S has signed up for an Active Galiano account. Now she's able to post events whenever she wants. But the neat thing is that Cheryl's events are usually that a fishing boat will come to Galiano on a specific day to sell its stock direct from the boat.

Long time no chat! There's been way too much going on behind the scenes here at Active Galiano, and I trust that you've been following our calendar with interest all on your own.

While I've been writing an article about our website for inclusion in the Active Page, I thought I'd send out a quick note with an update and a couple requests.

Active Galiano is getting over 20 unique visitors per day, and well over 750 visits per month. I hope we can double that in the coming months. Our website is now on the SECOND page when searching for "Galiano Island" on Google. [ I'm wondering if that's also true for folks doing the search from far away places. ]

We're in the middle of a jam packed week as usual: there's the beaver creek adventure, a new round of Feldenkrais starting up, a Food Program Cold Frame workshop, a pair of Galiano Concert Society events, Volleyball and Floor Hockey.

AND ! (drum roll)

ActiveGaliano is sponsoring it's first community development event this coming weekend... and we've decided to make it a fund raiser for the new Fitness Center Treadmill.

It's a great time of year to turn corners, and there's nothing like a good party to kick it off.

It's clear to me now that Active Galiano has reached a certain kind of critical mass. Thank you to all the very many of you who have started putting your own events into the Calendar. Our website wouldn't get anywhere if it wasn't for your contributions. For my part, I'm now ready to start pushing all of our content up as many physical real world flag poles as I can find. If you have any additional ideas about how our data (events, classifieds, ...) can be used, please do let me know!
