Bonnie Sher Klein is an award winning filmmaker, author, health care and disability consultant, and activist. Bonnie is known for her work with the NFB’s Studio D, with films that include Citizens’ Medicine, Speaking our Peace, and Not A Love Story: A Film About Pornography. In 1987 Bonnie suffered a catastrophic stroke that caused her to become quadriplegic, require assistance to breathe, experienced ”locked-in” syndrome and panic attacks. She spent 6 months in hospital and another 3 years in rehabilitative therapy. Bonnie and her husband will address the challenge of living in a rural community and its health care implications.
Michael Klein, MD, CCFP, FAAP (Neonatal-Perinatal) FCFP, ABFP, FCPS Dr Klein was head of the Jewish General Hospital Family Medicine Department for 17 years where he brought back family practice maternity care from a moribund state. He was head of the department of family practice at Children’s and Women’s Health Centre in Vancouver for 10 years, promoting excellence in maternity and newborn practice. He is currently researching the attitudes and beliefs of maternity care, and how difficult decisions on levels of maternity care can be made in a way that supports community sustainability. He and his wife Bonnie have collaborated in their work with “Compassionate Listening” in Israel and Palestine.
Bonnie and Michael are the proud parents of Naomi Klein (author of No Logo) and Seth Klein (Director of Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives).
