Next Round for the Grant Program
Dear Galiano Island,
Calling all island projects seeking money. It's time for the next round of the Active Galiano Community Grant program.
Now that Active Galiano is getting over 1500 unique visitors, over 3300 visits, and over 15,000 page views each month, it's time for round two of the Community Grants program.
It's Active Galiano policy to give away 100% of the value it creates, and plough that value directly back into community development.
On the value side, Directory Entry Owners that pledge $75 to the Grant Program will get 6 months of Sponsor Status on the site. Their Directory Images will appear on the right hand side of most Active Galiano pages. (They look like Ads).
On the fundraiser's side, it's a winner take all vote. Anyone who has been granted an Active Galiano account will be able to vote. The vote count will be continuously visible throughout the vote. Voting early will mean that you can bias future voters, but voting late will mean you could be a "king maker" between two projects that are running neck and neck. It's an experiment, but I think it's an interesting one.
To submit your project for the upcoming round, simply login to the site and go here: http://activegaliano.org/node/add/community-development-project
Deadline for Submissions will be October 7th. Voting will start that day and proceed until October 25th. If you have a directory entry that you want to see in the program, contact us via the Contact page on Active Galiano itself.
If we can marshal enough developer time, we'll be trying to add additional value for those who make the pledge to support the program. We'd like to see the sponsor's messages showing up in the systems automated e-mails for example. (That's some work for someone like me, or any other aspiring community minded web programmers out there.)
How will the winning project gather the proceeds? Simple... people who pledged to give the winner money will give it directly to the winning project, at which point their Sponsor Status will be set on Active Galiano, and they'll retain that status for six months. The winning project may or may not be able to give out tax receipts to those who donate, depending on the tax status of donations to that organization. The winner needs to be willing to accept payments (by cheque? by mail?) and inform Active Galiano of when folks have paid.
May the best project (or at least the project the community thinks needs the money most) win!
cheers!
Christian
