What's This For?

This site is an events calendar, used by residents, visitors, fans, friends, vacationers, and anyone with an interest in What the Heck is Going On on Galiano Island?

There are two extremely challenging aspects to building a community calendar with staying power...

• sharing the workload of maintaining event data
• establishing critical mass of usage, so that 'everyone' knows where to publish their own event info

ActiveGaliano.Org aims to succeed at meeting both these challenges by a) providing a very simple web based interface for event data entry. Anyone who can run a browser should be able to easily enter event information . This will simplify things for event hosts, the one's motivated to enter the data! And b) bridging the internet & real world by making it extremely easy to print calendars for posting in public places. Ultimately we hope that printing won't be too common, so as not to eclipse our ultimate goal of having the website be the real draw. The web data will be as up to date as it gets. The print data could be out of date hours after it's printed. We don't care.

When critical mass of use is established, people will be motivated to print the calendar, people coming to the island on short notice can find out -before- they get here what's going on, event organizers will be able to reach wider and wider audiences, and island hermits won't ever again wonder... "what the heck is that event going on at the south hall? i haven't heard anything about it!"

As outlined above, we have two simple but challenging goals. If we get those right, then we think the system will 'catch fire' all on its own.

This will be a non-profit, no membership, nothing but net, grassrootsy kind of thing. We will support ALL other organizations in their efforts to brand their own events.
