Waxing Your Beater Board: A Step-by-Step Guide

You’ve got your beater board set up, you’ve got your batter, and you’re ready to start baking! But before you go whipping up a storm, you need to make sure your beater board is properly waxed. Why? Because a well-waxed beater board helps prevent batter from sticking, making for a smooth and easy cleanup process.

Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of waxing your beater board:

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Beater board – This is the star of the show, so make sure it’s clean and ready to go.
Beeswax – You’ll need a block of beeswax to apply to your beater board. I’ve found that beeswax is the best option for beater boards because it’s natural, food-safe, and easy to apply.
Cheese cloth – You’ll use this to apply the wax to the beater board.
Iron – An iron is used to melt the wax and spread it evenly across your beater board.
Old towel – You’ll need this to protect your work surface from wax drips.
Rubber spatula – This is for scraping any excess wax off your beater board.

Step 2: Prepare Your Beater Board

1. Clean your beater board thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure to remove any leftover crumbs or batter residue.
2. Dry your beater board completely before moving on to the next step. You don’t want any moisture messing with your waxing process.

Step 3: Apply the Wax

1. Place your old towel on your work surface.
2. Place your beater board on top of the towel.
3. Cut a small piece of beeswax and place it on your beater board.
4. Cover the beeswax with a piece of cheesecloth.
5. Preheat your iron to a medium setting. Make sure the iron is steam-free!
6. Gently glide the iron over the cheesecloth, melting the beeswax and spreading it evenly over the beater board.
7. Repeat steps 3-6 until the entire surface of your beater board is coated with a thin layer of wax.

Step 4: Let the Wax Cool and Harden

1. Allow the wax to cool and harden completely. This should take about 15-20 minutes.
2. Once the wax is hard, carefully remove any excess wax with your rubber spatula.

Step 5: Enjoy Your Waxed Beater Board

1. That’s it! You now have a waxed beater board ready to tackle your next baking project.
2. To keep your beater board in tip-top shape, repeat this waxing process every few months.

Waxing Tips for Your Beater Board

Don’t overwax your beater board! A thin layer of wax is all you need.
If you have trouble getting the wax to stick, try using a little bit of oil to help it adhere to the surface.
Once your beater board is waxed, you can store it upright to prevent any warping or cracking.
