The Financial Advice That Will Leave You "Astonished" | The Oprah Winfrey Show | OWN financial advice

Are you living beyond your means? In this 2001 after-the-show moment, Oprah called that one of the biggest problems facing Americans. “I’ve made every salary, so I know what it’s like making 12 [thousand] and think, ‘If I only made 100…all my problems would be solved’. But what you do is just carry the debt with you”, she said. For more on #oprahwinfreyshow, visit

  1. I make 80 grande a year and I shop for all of my clothes from Walmart. Even my watch is from Walmart. The only expensive thing I own js my running shoes. To those that run you understand how important it is to have comfortable running shoes that don't squeeze your feet.

  2. 'Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves' – my English Grandma's advice. It's the little dollar/pound/euro here and there that really adds up.

  3. Another solid bit of sound financial advice…avoid confusing a NEED with a WANT.

I see so many people confuse the two and land themselves in mountains and avalanches of debt because they have been taught that they "need" the latest car on the market or that they "need" a big house with a big yard or "need" a luxury condo with all the trimmings in a fancy high-rise.

They've been taught that they "need" that big-screen television and that they "need" to live in a "nice" neighborhood in the suburbs.

Too many of us have been conditioned into thinking that we "need" to either be ordering out or eating out several times a week…I know, I fell into that trap several years ago and had to break out of that conditioning…I was a restaurant freak for years. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

Many of us have been sold on the false notion that we "need" a new wardrobe of clothes every single new season.

Take time out to divide your needs versus your wants…I know I had to do this to get rid of my debt and be able to retire.

I happily found I could live easily without eating out three or four times every week and without buying new holiday decorations every single holiday season.

Now I only eat out once every few weeks and avoid overpriced restaurants.

I now take better care of the holiday decorations I do have by storing them carefully in a set place in sealed containers…I'm now in the middle of a massive decluttering project in my home…so my decorations last much longer, stay free of dust and I can use the same ones for many, many years without feeling compelled to buy new ones.

So…take stock of what you truly need…do you truly need that big-screen television?

If you live in a big city like LA, San Francisco, New York, DC or Chicago, you really don't need a car at all…you can rent one on occasion or take public transpo.

Stop thinking that taking the subway or bus is "beneath" you.

Even the stylish, wealthy Oprah took buses and trains for years, especially when she lived in Baltimore. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

If you are single and either have no children or your children are long-grown and you have no pets…living in an apartment instead of a large house with a huge yard is no shame.

There are fine apartments and smaller houses out there that do have extra bedrooms for guests and storage.

Some apartments…even those low-rise garden-style ones without the fancy gyms and swimming pools…have small balconies for gardens.

Many city and even some suburban apartments have rec centers close by with wonderful playgrounds, pools and parks for visiting grandkids and great-nieces and nephews to play in.

    Be creative…make space and prioritizeโฃ
